Robotics Club
Goal: Team #346, the RoboHawks, has gotten off a great start with this year’s competition season. Alstom Power hosted the Kick-off meeting on January 5. That afternoon, the team had a productive work session that resulted in some great ideas for this year’s robot. The game is called “Overdrive” and, as you can imagine, it involves racing around a track to score points. The race is complicated somewhat as the robot also has to corral and move a 10 lb, 40-in diameter ball at the same time! As if that isn’t enough of a challenge, additional points are scored by lofting the ball over a 6 ft overpass on the track. Not to worry though, in the first two weeks of the build season, the team has already completed the chassis and has a working prototype of the ball handler. The team is enthusiastic about this year’s competition and is looking forward to the NASA/VCU Regional robotics competition at the Siegel Center the first weekend in March. Many thanks to our corporate sponsors for this years team: Alstom, Dupont, and Computer Resource Team, Inc. If your company might be interested in sponsoring our robotics team or any of our other competition teams, please contact Nancy Hoover to discuss the possibilities Members: Many of the members are Pre-Engineering students, but membership isn't limited to the specialty center students. All Bird students are welcome. Club Sponsor: Mrs Hoover If you have any information about this group, please email the webmaster at BirdRocketBoosters@comcast.net Thank You. |
Engineering ClubOne of the Engineering Club’s goals is to give back to the community. This year the club’s main service project has been designing a bocce ball mechanism to aid the special education department. The club also has a large role in assisting with the running of the Engineering Olympics. Members run the different activities and help lead participants to the different events. Challenges are also a large part of Engineering Club. These mini-engineering projects pit small groups against each other and yield the greater team. Projects have included a gingerbread competition, a paper airplane contest, and a marshmallow tower challenge. The club also has fun winter and end-of-the-year parties. These parties include lots of food and an array of games played with friends and are great social events. The Engineering Club meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month in room 106. It is open to the entire student population (not just Pre-Engineering). Please come and join us! |
